I’ve been having more oatmeal lately and finding ways to make it more flavourful. This is what I landed on. I find adding a small bit of clove somehow makes it taste more sweet so less sugar is needed.
Ingredients
1 apple
1 tbsp butter
1⁄4 tsp cinnamon
pinch of ground cloves
1 tbsp brown sugar
1⁄2 cup rolled oats
1 cup water
2 tbsp milk (optional)
Steps
Peel and dice the apple. I usually cut off sections to remove the core, leaving a bit of a square core. Then cut those sections into 1⁄4" slices, then cut those slices into 1⁄2" chunks. Whatever way you do it, make small chunks/silvers of apple.
Heat a small saucepan on medium-low heat. Once hot, add butter.
Once butter is melted, add apples, cinnamon, and cloves.
Cook the apples until soft, stirring ocassionally. About 7 minutes.
Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved, about 20 seconds.
Add oats and stir. You can toast the oats here by constantly stirring the dry oats for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Be careful not to burn the sugar.
Add water and bring to a boil.
Reduce to a simmer and cook the oats for about 5 minutes or until most of the water is aborbed.
Serve, adding the splash of milk. I often add sliced banana to this, but it’s fine as it is.
